Last week, we took some time away from screen-washing and labeled fossils from a different dig site. This week we got to apply some of the things we learned and actually identified a couple fossils. I'm still having a tough time recognizing the bones but it's really fun, almost like a puzzle. I find it really interesting to see the same bones look so different in each of these animals. Here's a picture of one of the skulls of the animals we used for reference when we identified bones, isn't it neat! (Collared Peccary)
This week we will actually be going to Thomas Farm, which is the dig site for all the Miocene fossils we've been screen-washing. I'm really excited to see what a dig site looks like and hopefully I'll be doing a little excavating of my own!
The thought of looking through and classifying fossils is really intriguing. It sounds like you are having a blast! I have recently been working an a virtual "anatomy table" at my museum job, and when I'm not presenting to visitors I have the skeletal system up, constantly defining the bones, trying to get better at naming them, so I somewhat understand your struggle with classifying. Can't wait to hear more about your internship and your trip to Thomas Farm!

Hey Keith,
ReplyDeleteawesome picture! sounds like you are really enjoying your time at your internship.Going out to the field sounds very exciting. I hope that goes well and maybe if you are lucky you will find some fossils. If you have the chance it would be nice if you can bring some fossils to show the class.
